The Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Quintet was established in the fall of 2004 at the invitation of the Kongsberg Jazzfestival, after Flaten received the prestigious "Vital prize" award at that year’s festival. The first lineup featured Anders Hana on guitar, Klaus Holm on saxophones, Fredrik Rundqvist on drums and Ola Kvernberg on violin, and their first concert at the Kongsberg Jazzfestival in July 2005 was described by the press as the festival’s highlight. The quintet recorded their first CD that fall, released in May 2006 on the Jazzland imprint. Ingebrigt’s original compositions are an eclectic blend of jazz, rock, electronic music, and free improvisation. These tunes are sometimes augmented with material from Thelonius Monk, Steve Lacy, Charlie Haden, Anthony Braxton, Marvin Gaye, George Russell and the Norwegian bass player Bjørnar Andresen.

After Ingebrigt moved to Chicago in 2006 he made some personnel changes, adding Dave Rempis on saxophones, Jeff Parker on guitar and Frank Rosaly on drums, keeping Ola Kvernberg on violin. The new lineup did their first tour in March 2007, with sixteen concerts in Norway and Sweden. A live recording from this tour titled “Year of the Boar” is available on Jazzland recordings. The band completed their second tour, this time in mainland Europe, in March of 2008.
